Sveti Jakob Loop from Ljubljana

This gravel loop starts in Stanežiče on the northwestern edge of Ljubljana and climbs through the Polhov Gradec Hills to Sveti Jakob (806 m), one of the most scenic hilltop viewpoints above the city. The route combines quiet paved roads, forest gravel and a short, steep final climb to the church, with wide views across Ljubljana and the surrounding hills. Starting in Stanežiče means you skip the urban riding from central Ljubljana and get straight into the hills. From the village, the route follows quiet local roads towards Sveti Jakob, gradually gaining height through forests, farms and small villages. The final approach to the church is the steepest part of the climb, with the gradient increasing just before the summit. At 806 m, the church of Sveti Jakob stands on an open grassy ridge with views over Ljubljana and the surrounding hills. On a clear day, the Kamnik–Savinja Alps and the Julian Alps are also visible. It is a good place to stop before continuing the loop. From Sveti Jakob, the route descends back into the forest before joining gravel roads towards Toško Čelo. This section is quieter and more remote, with a mix of short climbs, rolling forest roads and paved sections. Toško Čelo marks the final significant climb of the route, followed by a long descent towards Stanežiče. The route finishes back in Stanežiče after a mix of forest roads, quiet paved lanes and rural roads. Starting and finishing here keeps the ride out of central Ljubljana and makes it a convenient option for riders arriving by car. The route is suitable for gravel bikes with wider tyres. After wet weather, some of the forest gravel sections can become muddy and rough.
